Clothes Grace the Dance

The dazzling costumes in NTDTV’s Chinese New Year Spectacular are as much a part of each dance as the dance movements themselves. They are, in many ways, the teapot warmer on which the dance is performed. Clothes, hair, colors—this is what transports us to the Divine Land of ancient China.

The Spectacular's wardrobe designers put great effort into creating just the right effect. A costume starts with a concept of the dance. The dance may have a powerful story or be found in a specific dynasty. Designers pore over paintings, frescoes and even statues to find the right look. Accessories then come into the design—hair, shoes, hats, belts. Next come sketches. Designers must consider not only how an outfit looks but also its flexibility for dance movements and whether it is durable enough to withstand over eighty performances.

Then the sketch goes to the sewing workshop. Here garment makers select just the right fabric, make the pattern and produce a sample. If it’s not just right, the whole process starts over. If the sample is approved, the task of making the clothes begins. Multiply this countless times. A single dance in this year’s Spectacular, the dance drama of General Yue Fei, required more than 100 costumes and accessories.

For Amy Lee, the principal designer in New York, this effort is well worth it. “When I came to the United States, I saw it was very difficult to find any expression of traditional Chinese culture. Through this show I see the hope of being able to preserve my culture for the benefit of my daughter and the next generation.”

Ms. Lee has worked in the fashion industry for more than twenty years. She was a professor of fashion design and fashion history in China. Although her costumes take inspiration from different dynasties and ethnic regions, her favorite dynasty is the Tang. She says the Tang Dynasty reflects the zenith of Chinese culture—artistically, economically and politically. During this time China was very open-minded. Prosperous and peaceful, the Tang Dynasty drew on influences from India, the Middle East and Europe.

According to Ms. Lee, all this is reflected in the clothes. “The clothes were rich and confident. They were uplifting,” she said. “Women wore large, open sleeves, sometimes up to two and a half feet wide. They wore see-through materials and gowns with high waists that were decorated with large, open flowers.”

Each dynasty had its own characteristics that were likewise reflected in the clothes. In general, Ms. Lee says everything can be found in the clothes—even the ancient people’s morals and values. “Clothing isn’t just a way to cover the body. It also reflects a person’s thoughts, culture and respect for the gods.”

Ms. Lee and her team use costume design to make ancient Chinese culture come alive today, to help the audience understand that traditional Chinese culture has much it can teach us today. Ms. Lee knows that through her efforts with NTDTV, these positive aspects of ancient China will not be forgotten.

Homeschool Message Boards Talked About

There are a number of ways to find homeschool message boards and other supports on the web the days. But before anything else, I think it is necessary for you to know the basic concept of homeschooling. For the newbies and the curious, note and understand the following details:

The term “homeschooling” actually means to educate your children at home rather than in public or private school. Homeschooling exists in a number of ways. One of the most common is unschooling or child-led education, that is, when you follow your children’s natural interests and curiosities to educate them. There is also the School at Home method is when you purchase the textbooks for all subjects and follow much the same ideology put in practice in traditional school. Also, there are the classical approach or trivium, Montessori method, unit studies, and the satellite school. You will know everything about these approaches when you consider participating on homeschool message boards.

But, where exactly on the web you can find and participate in homeschool message boards? I have a few sites below that you can visit if you are really serious of knowing the different aspects of homeschooling, or you just want to know and make friends with people who are also interested in homeschooling.

Homeschool Central

Homeschool Central now offers a number of areas covering homeschooling. They also have maintained a lot of homeschool message boards that you can join if you want to post advices, ask questions or post comments on the other users’ posts. And, perhaps what’s best about this site is that it offers not only its own homeschool message boards, but also other links to forums that discuss about homeschooling.

Teen Homeschool Hang

This site was designed and developed for one particular purpose – to provide homeschooled teenagers a way to hand out with other homeschoolers of their age from all over the world, and to supply interesting things to do and read online. It is also nice to know that this site is a safe site. So, teens can have fun exchanging thoughts on the homeschool message boards and parents don’t have to worry. Also, this site is a Christian-based, but everyone is actually welcome. The managers and moderators of their homeschool message boards are current homeschoolers or recent homeschool graduates. So, whether you’ve been homeschooled your whole life or you just started heomeschooling, the Teen Homeschool Hang has a place for you online.

CRA California Homeschool

CRA California Homeschool message boards are the ideal place to go for California homeschoolers. This is where you can meet together online for support, questions, encouragement, and answers. Also, this is the exact place to share your homeschooling successes and struggles with the other California homeschoolers. What’s more nice to know about the homeschool message boards maintained by CRA is that their forums are open to all homeschoolers, afterschoolers, and people considering homeschooling or those who are seeking information. You can also post inquiries about general parenting and family issues here as these matters are highly welcome.

Coolest Idea For Publishers. Adsense Search With Google Toolbar

Adsense has several products under its belt and some are obviously more popular than others. Web publishers have been discussing and comparing adsense products such as referrals and contextual advertising in popular forums such as Digitalpoint. Apparently, referral products and even Google search does not appear as popular as contextual ads. Why is that so?

Publishers only benefit from contextual advertising when visitors click on the ads on the web page. In many instances, in order to achieve that, ads are optimized to blend in nicely with the look and feel of the web pages. When done right, these ads look like relevant links on the site and if visitors are interested in what is being advertised, they will click on the ads. Contextual ads are simple to implement and ads will show on the site within minutes of copying and pasting some simple Javascript code.

In contrast, it is not easy to generate the same amount of revenue using other adsense products such as Google search and referrals. Like contextual ads, implementing Google search involves copying and pasting some code. However, unlike contextual ads, publishers do not benefit when searches are being made. Each search returns a set of relevant results and if there are ads for those keywords, they will appear as sponsored results at the top of the page. The publisher only earns when the visitor clicks on one of those sponsored ads. So let's recap. The visitor has to key in some keywords, click on the search submit button, wait for the results to load, and IF he or she clicks on an ad, the publisher earns some money. Compare that to contextual ads, where the visitor simply have to make a simple click and the money is credited to the publisher's account.

It is even more difficult to convert visitors to revenue using Adsense referral products, although each conversion generally pays more. For example, refer a publisher to the Google Adsense program and if the publisher makes $100 within 180 days, another $100 will be credited to the publisher who sent the referral. That means the visitor has to visit a site, somehow locate the Adsense referral button, click on it, read more about the program, sign up and wait for approval. Upon approval, the publisher will have to implement the products and make $100 within 180 days. If not, whoever sent the referral to the adsense program makes nothing.

Here's another example. The Adsense program pays a referral fee if a visitor clicks on a button or link, download and successfully install the Firefox browser. The publisher's job, will then be trying to convince the visitor that Firefox is good for him or her, and send the visitor to the download page. If the visitor downloads the 5.33MB file and successfully install the browser, the publisher gets up to a dollar. Needless to say, it is indeed much tougher for the publisher to earn that dollar, compared to contextual ads.

So where does that leave publishers? Publishers want to promote the Firefox browser but what if they don't have any software/webmaster related sites that will convert nicely? So let's say a publisher have a site about dogs. He or she could put a download link on the site that says "We recommend searching more about dogs using the Google toolbar". The publisher don't get paid for the download but when the installer uses the toolbar to make a search and click on an ad, the account gets credited with money. The concept behind it is similar to Google search, just that it's on a toolbar. Google could come up with a web-based control panel (likely within adsense login) for publishers to generate the download. In the market, there are already web-based control panel tools that allows users to customize and generate brandable toolbars for download. Therefore, this idea could definitely become a profitable possibility for publishers and would be a dream come true for many!

Still, there remains one small nagging problem. Implementing such a product will mean that Google will have to share search revenues with publishers. Of the reported $1.098 billion dollars generated from Google owned sites in the final quarter of 2005, how much is Google willing to share?

Malware

The five types of malware are:

Virus: A virus is a computer program that has been coded to replicate itself and infect a computer without the user's knowledge. A virus spreads from computer to computer by infecting network files as well as CDs, USB drives, and other forms of removable media.
The best free anti-virus is AVG anti-virus which can be found at http://free.grisoft.com/ .

Trojan horse: Trojan horse or just Trojan is a program which looks legitimate but performs illegitimate actions such as granting full access to the intruder, installing a keylogger, disabling security software and as an invisible downloader and spywares. Spybot Search and Destroy is a free program that can find and delete Trojan horses and spywares. It can be found at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Adware: Adware (advertising supported software) is a software bundle which automatically downloads and displays advertisements to a computer in which it is installed. Adwares can be classified as privacy invading software. It is seen as a way to recover development costs by software developers. The best program to combat adwares is Ad-Aware 2007 and it can be downloaded at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Rootkit: A rootkit is a program which has been coded to take complete (or root) control of the system without the user's knowledge. Rootkits take full control of the operating system and therefore cannot usually be removed by anti-virus software. Rootkits usually modify the boot sector of the operating system or disguise as drivers and load during boot up. As a result, it is usually hard to delete them. The most recommended rootkit remover is Sophos Anti-Rootkit which can be downloaded at http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/sophos-anti-rootkit.html

Just An Expensive Electronic Brochure Or A Profitable Site?

Most websites are just expensive electronic brochures that do very little or nothing for the business concerned.

It is strange how business sense seems to go out of the window when it comes to the internet and the world wide web.

The internet and internet protocols (IP) provide many businesses - especially those in the SME sector - the chance to improve their productivity and profitability dramatically. But too many see it as "too difficult" or "too expensive" or something that they just "don't [want to?] understand".

They have been however convinced that they "must have a website or they are not even in the game".

Yet too many businesses' whilst they have ignored the opportunities that IP offers them at such a reasonable cost, once they have built their website then proceed to ignore that!

It's very strange. How many businesses would say?
  • 'Let's build a new store and then leave it empty';
  • 'Let's plan a direct mail campaign buy all the kit and then not bother to buy the stamps to send it out';
  • 'Let's pay for the stock and then just store it'.

Yet those are the equivalents of building and paying for a website and then not promoting it effectively in ALL advertising and promotions INCLUDING the world wide web itself.

One can see why people think it might not be worth the effort. There are over 55,000,000 top level domains on the web. There are nearly 12,000,000,000 web pages with about 10,000,000 added daily! On the other hand web based business is growing at 15 - 25% compound annually

There are millions of web searches by millions of people every day [See Google Zeitgeist to get a flavour of what people search for - the other 'big cats' Yahoo and MSN also have similar pages.] Please ignore the fact that the most popular searches are actors and news etc. What do you expect? There are plenty of more 'mainstream business' searches too.

Some examples of the other UK searches that are done:
  • Builder over 150,000 times in May 2005 - builder Bristol 57 times.
  • Fashion over 800,000 times - far too many for me to bother with says the local retailer.
Oh yeah! Click here - notice what the search engines can do now!

- Hotel was searched for over 5,000,000 times in May 2005. Hotel Bath was searched for 1,652 times; Bath Spa hotel 497 times, hotel Bath England 263 times and hotel Bath UK 228 times and there are a bucket load of results in the 100 plus searches category.

Over 85% of people use a search engine to find their way around the internet the majority use Google but Yahoo and MSN also have very large numbers of followers and cannot be ignored. There are also thousands of smaller general and specialized search engines and directories that are regulalry used.

If you are not working the search engines, familiarising yourself and your business with Pay per Click marketing, building up your prospect and customer email list and using your website to generate prospects that lead to sales then why bother having a website?

So you will ask how do we go about all of this?

Clearly the obvious answer is ask us to do it!

But a few tips are probably more what you were looking for! So:
  • Look at your web marketing plan as a long-term effort to grow your site to be the best most comprehensive (local / regional / national / interactive / amusing / something) resource on your product or service.
  • Be clear about what makes your site better and more valuable to your site visitors.
  • Make sure each page within your site targets and is optimized for only one or two keyword phrases each.
  • Use 2 - 6 word phrases instead of one-word keywords and you'll get more targeted visitors as well. Search your top keyword phrases on the various search engines so that you are aware of the competition and the volume of sites already successfully ranking for the terms you are targeting.
  • Use this information to help you with Pay per Click campaign development.
  • Add new information to your site regularly. Resources, white papers and tips not only add value but will naturally work wonders as keyword targeted pages. Offer the type of information those seeking your product or service will find useful and search for and that other sites will want to link to. You need to have well written content of value; not keyword stuffed ramblings.
  • Use the resources and downloads you offer to build your database.
Finally, just one other point - it doesn't "happen the next day". The technology is fast but search engines are programmed to provide the most relevant results - that means they realise that longevity is important and expect that good sites understand that they have to be 'proven' to rise up their rankings.

NSI Makes The Most Of Its Database With Dot Com Directory

Network Solutions Iraqi National Congress volition today launching its Dot Com Directory, a tool that uses the extensive database of companies that rich person registered region name calling done NSI and combines it with information from other database companies to produce a rival to the numerous yellow pages-like directories on the vane. Companies that registry their domains through with(p) NSI testament automatically qualify for a itemization and those that registered through and through 1 of the handful of companies that tin compete with NSI in the world name registration market tin can pay $119 to be included for two years. The advantage this has o'er other directories, says NSI VP marketing Doug Wolford is that the companies toilet alter their itemisation themselves at any time. And the advantage for NSI is that it has this ready-made database of companies that wealthy person registered , because until a few weeks ago it held the worldwide monopoly on the overhaul. There is a lot of debate in the internet community at the moment across World Health Organization precisely owns the rights to the register database, which contains all the domains registered in .com, .net and .org.

NSI reasserted its claim last week to the rights to the intellectual property. However, Wolford points come out that this is less controversial because it is the registrar database that NSI is working from, which until very recently was just the same as the , but now that other companies lavatory file directly into the operated by NSI under its agreement with the US government, this inspection and repair becomes I of the value- adds that NSI lav crack registrant that cross-file their NSI.
